In his article about the Hudson River School, Wallach wrote about the effects of this 19th century art movement. He stated, "Much of the terrain surrounding the Hudson has received permanent protection. New York State has designated 2.5 million acres in the Catskill Mountains and 6 million acres in the Adirondacks as parkland…." (Wallach 1). Durand still affects America to this day. Although, he is dead, his legacy lives in America through its preservation of land. All the areas that most of the Hudson River School artists have painted are protected today. For instance, the Catskill Mountains and Adirondacks Mountains located in New York are preserved. The New York government has worked to protect these parts of the land in the state. There would be no army or navy if Americans did not have any pride. Americans without patriotism for their country would find no motivation to volunteer to be in the army. In addition, Americans would find no reason to support their country. No one would pay their taxes because they are not proud of their country.
